You're 38 weeks pregnant. You’re just a couple weeks away from baby’s arrival, your nursery is finally ready (or close enough), and somewhere in the back of your mind, you keep thinking, I should have gotten maternity photos done. Maybe you've been scrolling Instagram at 2 a.m., looking at gorgeous bump photos and wondering if it’s even possible. Although you might have to be flexible with scheduling, it is never too late to capture this memory and you will never regret that you did.

As a Minneapolis maternity and newborn photographer who has been serving families across the Twin Cities since 2014, I want you to know that I hear from mamas at 36, 37, and 38 weeks more often than you might think. Life gets busy. The weeks blur together. And sometimes things just get last minute!

The Short Answer: No, It's Not Too Late

Here is what I always tell mamas who reach out in those final weeks: 38 weeks is actually a beautiful time for maternity photos. Your baby bump will be beautiful and you will also be incredibly excited to meet baby in a matter of days which makes the session even more special!

The ideal window for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 36 weeks, when you're beautifully round but still feeling relatively comfortable. But 37 and 38 weeks? Still absolutely worth it. In fact, some of the most breathtaking maternity images I have created have been in those final two weeks, when mama baby could arrive at any moment.

What to Look for When Booking a Last-Minute Maternity Photographer in the Twin Cities

If you're searching for a maternity photographer in Minneapolis, St. Paul, or the surrounding Twin Cities metro area at the last minute, here is what I'd encourage you to look for:

A photographer who has availability and is genuinely excited to photograph you. Not every photographer can accommodate a quick turnaround, but those of us who truly love this work will move things around for a mama who reaches out at 38 weeks. When you contact me, I will always do my best to make it work.

Someone with a wardrobe available for you. At 38 weeks, the last thing you want to do is run to the store looking for the perfect maternity dress. I have both a natural light studio that is relaxing and beautiful as well as a wardrobe so that even if you are last minute and we weather does not allow us to be outside, we will find something for you to wear without any fuss or hassle and the beauty of my studio will bless your session! Another perk: my studio at the Strong Scott Building in Northeast Minneapolis not only includes a beautiful wardrobe but it is also the perfect place to have your hair and make-up done from one of my referred stylists!

Someone who serves the greater Twin Cities area. I photograph maternity sessions throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Wayzata, Eagan, Woodbury, and beyond. Whether you'd like to use my studio or a meaningful outdoor location near you, we will work together to find a place that is beautiful and matches your vision.

Why These Photos Matter — Even at 38 Weeks

Ann Marie with her girls today!

I have been a both a mom and motherhood photographer long enough to know that the mamas who don't get maternity photos almost always wish they had. I know this not just as a photographer, but as a mama myself.

I am a mom of three daughters. My oldest is now in her mid-twenties. My youngest just turned sixteen. I wish I had maternity photos from when I was pregnant with each of them. I always loved being pregnant. It is really an experience that is unlike anything else and after my girls were born, a part of my always missed being pregnant. No one else in the world has a bond like you do with your baby. It is a beautiful feeling and something that you will want to hang on to. This is one reason I love photographing pregnancy for women. I am empathetic to what they are going through and I value what it means to them.
