When Should Newborn Pictures Be Taken?

A new mom is holding her newborn baby boy.

If you're expecting a baby soon, you're probably wondering when the best time is to schedule newborn photos. While there's no single perfect age, most photographers recommend taking newborn portraits sometime within the first two weeks after birth. Here's a closer look at the ideal window for newborn photography sessions.

The First 14 Days

The primary reason photographers suggest newborn photos in the first two weeks is because newborns are extremely sleepy and moldable during this time. They tend to stay curled up in the womb-like positions that make for adorable posed shots. Babies younger than 14 days old are also less likely to be fussy during the session. While the first two weeks are considered the newborn period, many photographers will advise taking photos even earlier - sometime within the first 5-7 days if possible. Newborns are most sleepy and curly during this initial week. Their dispositions tend to be a bit calmer too.

Could I Wait Longer?

The answer is a definite yes! Unlike other newborn photographers, I think that waiting for baby to be 4-6 weeks old is still the perfect time-frame to have a newborn photo session. The determining factor should always be based on how you feel! Everyone is different in how quickly they recover after having a baby. I always tell clients, if you feel that you would like to take your time acclimating as a family at home for two weeks after you get home, then do it! That way you will be able to feel adjusted as a family and more ready to venture out with baby to the studio for your photo session. Another blessing for waiting until baby is older is that they're more likely to keep their eyes open during shots and their personalities will begin to shine through. This also allows for more interactive images between you and your child which will bring your story to life.

When Should I Book A Newborn Photo Session?

Schedule in Advance! It’s best to book sometime during your third trimester before your due date. This allows you to tentatively schedule your session within two weeks of your estimated due date. Then once your baby arrives, you will text me to confirm whether or not we need to reschedule. Babies rule the show! You never know if they will opt to come early or wait awhile! Booking in advance is also important for me to plan your session. After you fill out your booking form, we will have a pre-session consultation to answer your questions and plan the details of your session. From selecting your client wardrobe dresses, to scheduling hair and make-up styling if you choose, to the wraps your baby will wear, we will have everything ready for your arrival at the studio so that you can have a relaxing and amazing experience! With a little advance planning, your newborn session will be a calm and relaxing process.
