Tips for Surviving Busy Season as a Photographer in Minnesota

I get it, September  - November can feel overwhelming as a family photographer.  Whether you are scheduling full sessions or a day of mini sessions, you need to be on your A game.  There is so much pressure financially, physically, and psychologically.  The largest percentage of our gross income comes in this time of year so being on top of everything carries extra weight.  We need to think about marketing, location finding, good client relations, book keeping, equipment, software, time for editing and following the weather radar like a meteorologist!  I literally just had a panic attack!!!

Here are some helpful tips to get you through family photography busy season in Minnesota!

Plan your calendar:

Look at if before you, then write client names on a check list with the date of their session and their projected date for deliver and then check it off!  I use electronic "Sticky Notes" on my desktop so that I can see my editing queue. This gives you a sense of control and accomplishment!

Weather Tips:

Look at the weather ahead of time each week and, in your mind, choose potential weather re-schedule dates.  Have these open at the beginning of each month so that you can easily offer them when needed.  If you think a date will for sure be a wash-out, communicate with your client ahead of time so that you are both on the same page and know your back-up is all set.  This takes stress off of you both!

Remind Yourself Why You Do What You Do!

Remind yourself, of why you do what you do when things feel heavy.  Your work is a blessing for you and your client families!  Approach it as a time to bless them.  This takes some of the weight off of your shoulders.  This is something we get to do as photographers and can fill us with gratitude.

Learn to Say No!

Say no when you have to and without guilt.  You do not need to feel guilty about saying no to someone who asks you to do a session the "Weekend of November 26" - yes, that is Thanksgiving weekend - and you can say no to the entire weekend because you deserve to be with family, too!

Take a Break!

Take breaks to take a walk, enjoy your kids' soccer game, or just be alone.  This is more than just self-care, it is imperative to help you have enough energy for what you have to give during your sessions!
