What to Wear for Maternity Photos in the Spring

If you’ve been browsing my maternity session page, you may have noticed something important — my maternity photography is emotional, natural, and deeply connected. It’s not about posing dramatically or looking glamorous, but it is about embracing the beauty of pregnancy and preserving memories of how you looked and felt during a very special, yet fleeting time in your life. These memories will not only be precious to you, but to your children. I also recognize that this season in a woman’s life can be challenging! Drastic changes to you your body, your energy levels, and your emotions can impact your sense of well-being and how you view yourself. My goal is to help women feel beautiful in their own skin and to recognize how amazing and powerful they are! You are carrying life inside you and that is a miracle to be celebrated! It is my goal to help my maternity photo clients have an experience which allows them to feel good about themselves inside and out while documenting their pregnancy in an authentic way.

One of the ways I do this is styling their session in a way that reflects who they are while making them feel special. Every client has access to my curated wardrobe for women and a styling guide which shows them how to dress their partner and other family members. I have selected a variety of dresses - some less formal and others with a more dramatic flare - but they all have the same thing in common, they are in colors that photograph well and are timeless. Dresses come from special designers who create pieces specifically for photographers such as Eden Art Dresses, Seila Art, and Reclamation Design. I also work with clients who want a more casual look that does not include dresses. These looks pull from pieces that I have in my closet combined with what they already have in their wardrobe.

My dresses and casual offerings provide clients with the confidence that their outfits will be beautiful, will help them feel special, and will save them time and money!

Casual Maternity Outfit Ideas (That Still Look Artistic)

Many of my clients prefer a relaxed, lifestyle look for their maternity session. And those sessions are often some of the most intimate and unique. Here are a few casual maternity outfit ideas that photograph beautifully:

Jeans + Bralette or Cropped Shirt for Soft Belly Portraits

This is one of my favorite looks for intimate, connected images.

  • Fitted or relaxed jeans (slightly unbuttoned for comfort)

  • A neutral bralette, bandeau, or fitted tank

  • Bare feet for an organic feel

This look highlights your baby bump in a way that feels natural and comfortable while looking gorgeous!

Cardigan + Bralette + Denim

Layering adds warmth and texture.

  • Soft knit cardigan (cream, beige, muted tones)

  • Lace or simple cotton bralette

  • Light or medium-wash jeans

This creates cozy, lifestyle-inspired maternity portraits that feel relaxed but refined.

Oversized Sweater + Jeans

Perfect for outdoor golden-hour sessions.

  • Neutral oversized sweater or sweatshirt

  • Cozy jeans

  • Minimal accessories

The result? Soft, emotive images that feel timeless.

“But I Don’t Know What Will Photograph Well…”

You don’t have to. As described on my maternity session page, I personally guide each client through styling. Whether you choose a dress or not, you will receive:

Your images will still feel cohesive, artistic, and elevated — even with a casual wardrobe.

My goal is never to change who you are, but to provide you with an experience in which you don’t need to worry about the details!

Maternity Dresses That Are Comfortable and Beautiful! (And you don’t have to buy them!)

Many of the dresses in my client closet are designed to be worn to be worn two ways. One as a simple, lace dress and then the option to unbutton the front to show your baby bump!

One of the reasons clients love my sessions is that I take care of the details, including, having extensive wardrobe of dresses available for them to use at no extra cost. There is nothing worse than buying an expensive dress that you only wear once (other than your wedding dress of course!). These dresses are curated specifically for motherhood and are both comfortable and beautiful.

Weather during the spring in Minnesota can be either cold or hot! Opt for dresses that offer flexibility. Something that is comfortable and has some flow to it allows for movement and is comfortable. If things get a little chilly, I always have a pretty wrap or cardigan handy. These also add beautiful layers and textures.

Your Spring Maternity Photo Outfits Will Reflect Your Story!

Whether you choose:

  • Jeans and a bralette

  • A cozy cardigan and denim

  • A simple knit set

  • Or a beautiful gown (Or you can do both in one session!). I always allow clients to wear more than one outfit during their session.

Your maternity session with AMG Photography will be an experience you will never regret!

What Why Add a Maternity Session to Your Newborn Experience?

three images of a family during pregnancy, after baby is born, and the final of the baby one years old all taken by Ann Marie Grocholski of AMG Photography

Many families who book their newborn session with me choose to add-on a maternity session to their newborn session — or include it within their Newborn Milestone Collection — and here’s why:

Tell the Beginning of Your Growing Family’s Story

Pregnancy is where your baby’s story begins. Documenting your pregnancy adds a strong connection to your newborn images and creates a complete narrative. As your child grows, they will love to see what mom (and dad) looked like right before they were born.

Get to Know Your Photographer Before Your Newborn Session

Forming a relationship with my clients is important to me. Your maternity photo session allows you to get comfortable with me in front of the camera before the day of your newborn session. All of your nerves will be set aside come newborn photo day because you already got to know me and had a good experience creating your maternity photos. This relaxed atmosphere also results in beautiful images that are natural, authentic, and truly you.

Consistent Artistic Style

When maternity is included in your newborn milestone collection, your images are edited and styled consistently from bump to baby’s first year.

Investment Value

Bundling your maternity session with your newborn session provides greater value than booking sessions separately. Check out my Investment Page for More Details.
