I am starting a new series of blogposts about Family Stories. What better way to do this than to highlight my own family! I am a family photographer who loves to print images. This is why I include a printed 8x10 or 11x14 photo with almost every one of my collections. We need these images off of our computer screens and on our walls, on our desks, and in our full view. Why is this important? Because our history is important. Because time goes too fast. Because we need reminders of who we are. Because sometimes by just glancing up at a photograph on the wall we are reminded of all that we have. Because these images will be a gift to future generations. Because an escape from our screens and technology enlivens our souls. So, print, preserve, and pass on your story. You will never regret it!

I create a photo book for my family every year. I create one either for each child individually, or in order to commemorate an event in our family’s history like a trip or milestone. This past year, my daughter Maya became a senior in high school. I wanted to create something for her that not only showed her beauty, but truly reflected who she is as a person. I also wanted to commemorate the special times we were able to spend together taking photographs. These were the moments when it was just her and me. These were times when we got to connect, share our ideas, laugh, and even cry.

Maya is quiet and reserved, but has an inner strength that I admire. She is nurturing and caring of others and always wants to ensure that others are happy or taken care of. As a 17 year old, she has been hurt quite significantly by many typical things that 17 year olds go through like struggles with friends, relationships, and the daily stressors to succeed. However, through it all, she has come to a place of humbleness. She has realized there is strength in asking for help. Day by day she is learning where her true value lies. Not in the demands of this world, but in the way God has created her, the way He sees her, and in the ways that He and her family love her.

Now she is about to embark upon a new adventure in her life. I may not be around to photograph it all, but she will have these photo books with her always to remind her of the special times we had together and in the future, the images that we capture together, will be an account of some of the most amazing experiences of her life. The story will be different, but the history will go on forever.
