When is the best time of day for my family to have a family photo session? Family photos are best an hour before sunset or at sunrise. There is a reason these times of day are called the “golden hour”. The light is dreamy and soft, and, well, golden. I know it is hard to keep little ones up a bit later, but, trust me, it is so worth it! We will explore locations within the Twin Cities where you an explore with your kiddos and enjoy your time as a family.

At the beginning of September, I had the honor of participating in a photography education experience called @Thelightchasersretreat. Four days in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado provided not only stunning landscapes, but the most optimal light! It was breathtaking. The instructors, D’ann Boal of Smitten and Swoon photography and Dana Leigh, are masters of light and understanding how to use light as an amazing artistic tool in your photography. Working together with a group of other professional and hobbyist photographers made for not only a time of professional growth, but of camaraderie and bourgeoning friendships. Truly an incredible experience.

I am always searching for the best light during my client sessions. So if you see me searching, and peering above your head, or looking off into the distance, I am not being a crazy person, but I am literally looking for the perfect light. Light that will make the details in our session sparkle. Light which will create a rim of golden light above your head. Light which will provide soft shadows which drift across your face. Light which will provide a glow that envelops you as you snuggle with your family. Light is the magic of photography and the time of day we choose to bask in its loveliness truly matters!
